"Percent for Art"
is the public art program of the CIty of Chicago,
whereby1.33%
of the construction cost of public buildings is budgeted for the purchase
of artworks. Since
its inception in 1978, sculptures, murals, prints, stained glass, and photographs
have been commissioned or purchased and installed in the city buildings throughtout Chicago.
The City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs administers the Percent
for the Art Program through
the Public Art Committee, which is responsible for policy implementation
and final approval of projects. Project Advisory Panels review the projects and report recommendations
to the Public Art Committee. Each
Project Advisory Panel consists of the Director of Public Art, who acts as Chair; the
architect of the facility; a representative of the city department for which
the building is being built; two
representatives of the arts community; and two representatives of the community
served by the facility.
In
addition to other resources in Chicago, Project Advisory Panel members may
also consult the Percent
for Art Program Artist Slide Registry, although an artist does not have
to be in the registry to be eligible for
a commission. The registry is open to all artists.
To enter your work in the Artist Slide Registry, complete a application
form and return it with current digital images (in jpeg format, 300 dpi resolution). Also, include a
current resume and support materials,
such as catalogs, articles, and reviews. Do not send original materials. Please note that
if you have previously submitted materials to the slide registry, artist
files are maintained
for five years. It is the responsibility of the artist to update his or
her file. Submissions
become property of the CIty of Chicago.
